Fruits of Labor Alderson is a casual cafe tucked into a renovated old gas station on E Riverview Avenue, blending local history with fresh, thoughtfully prepared food. The atmosphere leans toward bright and tidy, with a friendly, down-to-earth vibe that makes it a comfortable spot for both quick lunches and relaxed stops while passing through town.

This cafe caters well to those looking for quality sandwiches and salads made with simple, fresh ingredients. Items like the egg salad croissant, club sandwich, and wraps stand out as popular choices, reflecting a menu that balances approachable comfort with a bit of bakery charm. Local touches come through not only in the offerings but also through the availability of West Virginia products like maple syrup, local chocolate, and coffee, which complements the sense of place.

Visitors will find the service welcoming, often commented on for its warmth and attentiveness, which enhances the experience without feeling over the top. The space itself is kept clean and inviting, suitable for a midday break or a casual meet-up with friends. Though the indoor seating is modest, the novelty of dining inside a retrofitted gas station—complete with vintage pumps still visible outside—adds a subtle layer of character.

For those timing their visit, lunchtime seems to be prime, especially for locals grabbing a hearty sandwich or craving a treat from the bakery case. The carrot cake cookie, in particular, has gotten local buzz as a sweet finish or takeaway indulgence. Soups like the Italian wedding or barley and potato offer warming options for cooler days, making this a versatile spot year-round.

  • Best for casual lunches with fresh, straightforward sandwiches and salads
  • Locals and travelers who appreciate clean, friendly environments and regional food touches
  • Ideal visits during lunch hours or mid-afternoon when bakery items shine
  • Atmosphere that mixes small-town charm with a revived roadside vibe

Great little restaurant that has excellent food, great staff, reasonable prices, is always clean, and has a great mission. I really enjoyed their barley and potato soup and chicken salad. The pasta salad was also good, but I did find it a little sweet

Fruits of Labor — may be Alderson’s most precious gem! I’ve only picked up lunch twice here but we have not been disappointed. The egg salad croissant sandwich and pasta salad are insanely good! My husband loves the ham salad croissant and pasta. DO NOT miss out on this bakery’s incredible carrot cake cookies too! Holy Guacamole, the bakery items are what dreams are made of, for real! This bakery/cafe closes at 3pm so make sure you swing by when you’re able. You’ll see them making fresh pasta salad and other items at 2pm, since the end of day crowd is just as busy as lunchtime. You can call in your order ahead of time; however, there’s no need. The service is expeditious and the food is delicious!!

Stop here if you are traveling nearby. What a delicious treat. No exaggeration. Pretend for one meal, desserts have 0 calories and treat yourself at the end of your yummy meal. This is literally inside of an old gas station...redone, of course. Gas pumps are still outside. GO.

Stumbled upon this hidden gem on our recent adventure. The best breakfast/brunch we had in a LONG time. Everything’s super fresh and delicious. We had the berry mandarin wrap and the egg salad croissant, and a cheesecake afterwards. Their fruit iced tea is the best one i had in the us. The service was really friendly and helpful, also one of the best we had in a while. Dont miss on the opportunity to support a local small busines, especially if it’s this one

I live in Tampa Florida. I like travel. This place has the best food, dessert, and coffee I have had for an extremely long time. Everything I tasted was over the top with flavor. Please get a bigger sign because we almost missed it driving through town. The fact that it’s in an old garage is even better.

I believe that this restaurant was a gas station in its earlier life. Don't let the appearance stop you from enjoying splendid food and service. We enjoyed a tasty lunch, opting for sandwiches with a nice variety of salads as side dishes. The staff is helpful, extremely accommodating and very friendly. It was a superb experience. Don't think of leaving without a few of the fresh baked items. I jumped on the oatmeal raisin cookies because another guy in our party brought all of the remaining brownies. My cookies were fabulous. Highly recommended.
